Midweek Fred Round Up
As we sit out this round of fixtures time to have a look at what's happening around the second phase of games in the Betfred Group stage.
We'll start obviously in Group G. Stranraer made their debut in the competition travelling through to Falkirk where they suffered a 1 - 0 defeat, McManus scoring in the ninth minute. Meanwhile Ayr United faced their second away game, visiting SPL side Livingston. This was to prove a less successful trip for The Honest Men losing 2 - 1. Souda gave Livvy the lead on 25 minutes, Murdoch equalised for Ayr in the 51st only for Lamie to grab an 83rd minute winner for Livvy.
Possibly the most remarkable game of the night was in Group D where Peterhead and Inverness CT fought out a scoreless draw. Nothing especially remarkable about that but followed was an extraordinary penalty shoot out won 11 - 10 by Peterhead - every Peterhead player scored their penalty. Goalkeeper Greg Fleming being the hero of The Blue Toon scoring the decisive penalty after ICT keeper Mark Ridgers shot wide - prior to that Ridgers had been man of the match, keeping his side in the game with a string of saves.
That wasn't the only penalty shoot out drama of the night, In Group C Alloa were held to a 3 -3 draw by Elgin before Elgin went on to win the shoot out 6 - 5. Both teams scoring their first five penalties, both then missing the first sudden death penalty, Cooper scored for Elgin before Stirling missed for Alloa sending the bonus point north. There was also a 3 _ 3 draw in Group E when Queen Of The South entertained local rivals Annan Athletic, this time the penalty shoot out ended 5 - 4 for the home side with Queen's scoring all five of their's.
Group E was the group for goals tonight with putting 6 past Dumbarton at Cappielow, the Sons only getting one in response. Morton had six different scorers in the game which in itself is pretty unusual.
Surprise of the night was Montrose' s 1 - 0 defeat of St Johnstone, a 71st minute Masson goal enough to get the win. In the same group Ross County put four past Brechin at Glebe Park to no response from the home side.
In Group A there were wins for Dundee United and Hearts. United winning 2- 1 at Stenhousemuir through two quick goals early in the second half from Watson and Butcher, Munro pulling one back for Stenny in the 70th minute. Halkett and McDonald scored in the 8th and 22nd minutes to give Hearts a two nil win at Cowdenbeath.
In the night's other game in Group F Partick saw off Queens Park in the Glasgow Derby with a 2 -1 away win.
